Description of Services:
  • Provides a therapeutic program through visitation by dogs and their volunteer handlers to individuals dealing with illness, loneliness, depression or recovering from surgery
  • Offers visitation in facilities such as daycare centres, hospitals, long-term care facilities, senior's residences and special needs programs
  • Encourages and welcomes volunteers, especially those with friendly, well-behaved dogs who would be interested in brightening an individual's day
  • Evaluates each dog to ensure the best temperament for the task
  • Requirements

    Eligibility - Population(s) Served:
    • Volunteers must be at least 18 years old and own a dog and

    • Be willing to commit to the program and a placement facility for at least one year

    • Cannot accept Pit Bull applicants due to passing of Bill 132
    Application:
    • Application available online for requesting dog therapy services

    • Requires a criminal records check

    • Must attend an orientation session followed by an evaluation of the dog and owner's dog-handling abilities
